I would like to know if it would be easy to add another gradient fill mode to the existing ones that would be 2 colors, with a custom "depth" that would apply the color 1 to a given region and smoothly gradient-fill (with an adjustable depth) to color 2 at the boundary.

The point being that the region shape be left arbitrary.

I attach a typical phase diagram plot with different regions labelled 1 to 5. The idea would be to show that the limits are uncertain by having the region colors fade in a common background color to represent the boundaries.

Current modes do not work here because the different regions don't have a rectangular shape I think.

Any thoughts ?http://www.originlab.com/ftp/forum_and_kbase/Images/Graph91.ogg
