I know how to index the groups by a Label in a third column. The resulting index is a color based Label. My question is, how can i label the data groups by different symbols and not by color ?

I'm not sure what you meant when you said "label the data groups by different symbols". Do you mean that you want to change the shape of plot symbols based on the data groups? If so, you can map the values of the third column as indexes to the symbol shape by assigning the column to the "Shape" option (when you turn On the "Show Construction" check box). The index values of each symbol shapes are at: http://wiki.originlab.com/~originla/ltwiki/index.php?title=LabTalk:List_of_Symbol_Shapes
