I am looking for any examples on how to use Origin to make wind-rose diagrams. A wind-rose diagram plots the wind speed as a pie-shaped bar in the direction defined as the number of degree of wind direction. Thank you for any input.

Michael,

You are correct. If you want the columns stacked you will need to group the data - or rather, you should skip steps 8 and 9 where you ungroup the data. Does this work OK for you?

In regard to the data not displaying at zero degrees (North)... this is a bug. To force the columns to display at zero degrees, perform the following:
1. With the graph active, select Format:Layer.
2. Select the (Plot Details) Display tab.
3. In the Data Drawing Options group, clear the Clip Data to Frame check box.
4. Click OK to close the dialog box.

Note: I will add your name and increment the number of customers who have reported this bug. It should be fixed in a future version of Origin. You will be contacted if a version becomes available with this fix.

Thanks!
Barb

Greg,

Thank you for the note. I have made the wind rose and am almost there. The two remaining problems I have not been able to work out are;

- the bars will not stack unless you group the data sets. This does not seem to be too much of a problem but is different from your suggestions, Nornally the bars are stacked to prevent data from being hidden.

- The data in the North Direction does not show up??? I have tryed varying orientations of the plot and other parameters and i can not figure out why it will not work. Can send example plot by email if it would help get input.

Thank you very much for getting me started in the correct direction!!

Michael

In Origin terms you might refer to a Windrose plot as a NON-GROUPED-COLUMN-POLAR-PLOT - which should give you a clue how to make it.

Suppose we have data like this:

Direction1 to 55 to 1010 to 1515 to 2020 to 25>25
00.790.520.09000
22.50.790.350000
451.661.40.170.1700
67.51.40.610000
900.871.310.090.090.090
112.51.050.790000
1351.050.70.09000
157.50.961.310.52000
1803.323.41.220.2600
202.50.791.220.44000
2251.481.660.440.090.090
247.54.453.751.220.440.350
2708.24.361.220.440.170.09
292.55.853.660.44000
3153.751.750.440.090.170
337.50.520.440000

where the Direction column is X data and the rest are Y data.

  1. Highlight all the Y columns and select Plot : Polar from the menu.
  2. Click the "Set Angular Range" button on the graph.
  3. Enter 22.5 for the Increment value and click OK.
  4. Click the button which sets the style to clockwise from zero at the 12:00 position.
  5. Open the Plot Details dialog by (for example) right-clicking on the graph and selecting Plot Details Note 1
  6. Change the Plot Type to Column/Bar and click OK
  7. Double-click on the Layer 1 icon in the upper left of the graph.
  8. Click on any of the datasets in the Layer Contents box (all should select automatically).
  9. Click the Ungroup button then click OK.

This provides a basic Windrose, but lets add some pizazz:

  1. Back in the worksheet, add a text column with this data:N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW, NNW (note the name of your column).
  2. Back in the graph window, select Format : Axis Tick Labels : X Axis Tick Labels.
  3. Click the Top icon in the Selection list.
  4. Change the Tick Label Type to "Tick-indexed dataset" and select the Dataset from step 1.
  5. Click OK and you should see the compass points displayed around the Polar graph.
  6. Open Plot Details again and select the first datset in the tree.
  7. Click the spacing tab and change the 20 to 80.
  8. Select the next dataset in the tree and set its spacing to 60; the next to 50; etc.
  9. Click OK.

Note 1 : In versions earlier than 6.0 select Format:Plot from the menu.
