Hello,
the SR2 upgrade to Origin 6.0 has significantly improved exporting capabilities, however I still observe a problem: If I use symbols of smaller size (e.g. five) in a data plot, an export to the vector formats (AI, EPS, PDF, EMF)distorts a symmetry of some symbols - circles become elliptic, squares oblong. The same problem appears if the page is copied to another application. It does not happen if the EPS file is created by the PS printer driver. Does anybody know a solution of this difficulty?

Hi Pavel,

So sorry that I missed these new options...they are part of the SR2 fix for the exact problem! I Dropped the ball on this one. They are not currently documented in the manuals or in Help but will be in our next full release. Information like this can be found in our on-line searchable knowledge database at

http://www.microcal.com/www/tech/techdataform.asp

Search on the keywords "Control resolution". I am glad you found the answer. Thanks for your persistence.

Hi,
I've made an additional research on the problem and found that it only appears if radio buttons in the Page Tab(Options)are set to the choice Advanced/Keep Size. Other possibilities (Simple and Advanced/Set Resolution)produce correct symbol shapes.
Unfortunately there is no Help to these radio buttons, so I do not know what these choices mean exactly and if this behaviour is natural. In any case, the distorted symbols can be avoided by appropriate settings.
Thank Gary for testing and comments.

Hi...

I see some on screen distortion but not when printed. If you can, please send your project file and sample image files to technical support along with a description of the problem. You might want to make sure that the SR2 patch was properly installed by selecting Help:About Origin and verifying the version.

O. K., I will try to contact technical
support - just a comment. The distortion appears on the screen also at extreme magnifications, e.g. 500dpi in GSView2.9.
In this case a 5 point symbol has a size about seven milimeters on 15inch 800x600 monitor and the distortion is up to 2mm, so an effect of the display resolution can be excluded. Similarly, the distortion can be found when printing on HPLJ1100 or 2100M printers. 5 point "square" has sides about 2mm and 1.6mm, in the worst case. Again, the difference of 0.4mm is much bigger than a dot size on 600dpi printer.
Only part of symbols belonging to one data set is distorted. It looks like a bug in the conversion to vector formats caused by rounding coordinates or dimensions of the symbols.

Hi,

I tested multiple Line+Symbol graphs comprised of square, circle, and triangle symbols at both 5 and 8 pts. I exported them as *.EMF and *.EPS image files and inserted them into Word '97. I also copy/pasted the graphs into Word '97 and created *.EPS files using the printer driver method and inserted them into Word '97. Viewing the images in Word I did see some on screen distortion (at 72 dpi) but when printed out on an HP LaserJet 5M printer (600 dpi) the symbols were perfectly (or nearly perfect) formed. Furthermore, when I viewed both the exported and printed *.EPS files in GhostView the symbol images appeared distorted at low resolutions (72 dpi) but they became more and more perfectly shaped as I increased the display resolution.

Does the distortion you are reporting occur on screen or when printed out to a modern high resolution printer? I hesitate to rule out a reported problem without seeing your project file and exported images but I strongly suspect that this is largely a display resolution or pixelation problem. I recommend submitting your files to your Origin technical support provider. Let them know whether the distortion appears on screen or on a printout, the name and version of any other applications that are involved, and the respective resolutions of your display monitor and printer.

I'm also having the same problem. Also greek characters do not export in PDF format. The best results I've had are with JPG, but it would be nice to use EPS and PDF as well.
