I am evaluating Origin for a project. I have some x,y,z data which represents samples taken over a geographical area. What I want to plot on the floor of the graph is a set of lines representing geographic objects (e.g., rivers, highways, lakes, etc.) over which the data was collected so the person viewing the slide can see what the data means. I have outline data for these artifacts (e.g., (x0-y0)(x1-y1) for highways and segments of highways, sets of polygon points for other features which only need to be drawn in outline. I need to see the same data plotted on a contour graph. Since I'm very new at this product, I'd appreciate some ideas (if I can do it, we'll buy the product)

Hi,

This can easily be done. Just create a contour plot as normal (with a matrix window active select Plot3d:Contour Color Fill) and then activate the Y column of your line segment or polygon dataset, activate the contour plot, and then select Graph:Add Plot to Layer:Line. For the polygon dataset you can enable any desired pattern fill (including none) in the Plot Details dialog box. The X and Y axis scales should have a Manual rescale (set this on the Scale tab in the Axis dialog box) before adding the line plots so that Origin does not rescale the contour plot.

An engineer at OriginLab who is into such things created the graph below. I hope this is helpful.
