I have two sets of xy data which I would like two present together in a contour plot. Can anybody give me any help on how to approch this.

Posted - 08/16/2001 : 4:31:07 PM It is possible to show multiple sets of Y data in a 3 dimensional cross-section using Plot: 3D: XYY format. I prefer the waterfall plot. To create this you will need to have all of the Y data with a common time base. You can also forgo the time and place all of the data in a worksheet with no X column data. Origin will then plot using the row numbers. Once the data is in a worksheet select all of the Y columns and then select from the main Origin Menu Plot: 3D XYY: 3D Waterfall… You can also try the 3D Wall option. By adjusting the spacing between the datasets, you can get a fairly nice representation of the top contour of all the datasets combines. Select Format: Plot: Spacing tab… and select Gap between walls 0%.
If you want a true 3D representation, you will need to move the Y data into a matrix. This again will only work if there is a common X value or step between the Y datasets. To start the conversion, make sure that all of the Y data is in a single worksheet with NO X column. You will then select from the main Origin menu Edit: Convert to Matrix: Direct… This will move each Y dataset into its own column in the Matrix. By selecting Plot 3D: Color Map Surface, Origin will create a surface by interpolation of the data between the datasets. If this does not display the data to your liking, you should try sending your data to OriginLab technical support.

Posted - 08/15/2001 : 2:39:10 PM Thanks for the reply. But I think I need to explain my problem a bit better.
I have one sample and I run this sample on two instruments. Each instrument will give me the results in a x-y dataset. The x-value will give me the property measured on each instrument and the y value is the signal intensity of the corresponding detector. I am now trying to put the results from both instruments together in one plot (since the describe the same sample. (To make this all more complicated, I actually have 8 samples that belong to one batch and I like to present all 8 samples in the same plot. I guess this is were the contour plot comes into play.) I have seen that these type of results are often presented in a contour plot. I hope this a little clearer now and if now please let me now. I am pretty sure there is a way to do this on Origin and somebody must know how.
