I am currently introducing origin to my students in the form of a sminar. For this, I would like some information I can hand out, either a book, or some electronic guide other than the online help. I found neither so far, and would appreciate help

You don't mention the version you will be using but I'll assume it is the current version, 6.1.
You can download a PDF containing seven tutorials that introduce the basic operations in Origin. This PDF is available at: http://www.originlab.com/www/resources/document/index.asp
I can also provide you with PDFs of each of the User Manual chapters. If you want this, please contact me directly at documentation@originlab.com.
You might also be interested in our technical review resources available at:

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
