I would like to plot a function containing the data in a column. I mean the function should be the sum of the data in two different columns, while one of the column is multiplied with x. I can't figure out how to do this with Origin, it must be possible right? I also can't figure out how to determine the minimum of a plotted function.
It would be great if someone can help me :)

Posted - 01/21/2016 : 12:12:23 PM Hey Snow,
Thank you for your help. I now have the Minimum calculation :)
Your post is almost the right direction. I want to plot:
(So I somehow have to do what you said for all possible x-Values (between one and three) and it is also not only that I have in one row, I also need the sum for of the expression for every x...)
Thank you so much! Cheers Sandra |

On Quantities tab, under Quantiles, you can check Index of Minimum and Index of Maximum to find the row numbers for the min and max. Then find the corresponding X values. Will this work?
Thanks, Snow |

You can add a new column in worksheet next to your two columns N_i and t_i. Highlight the column and Ctrl+Q to open Set Column Values dialog. Enter some formula with syntax like this I suppose e is exponents. Not sure what x is. You said continous variable. I just set a =2; x=3 in Before Formula Script
Thanks, Snow |

The Minimum calculation worked well, although I don't know the Position of the Minimum, just it's value.
The function f(x) I want to plot is as following: I have two data sets N_i and t_i with 256 values each. I now have to plot the f(x) that is the sum (from 1 to 256) of N_i*e^((t_i+a)/x)). x is not a data set, just a continuous variable. I tried to use the sum function but it always says that I cant exert such math functions on the columns..
Thanks! :) |

Posted - 01/19/2016 : 05:43:52 AM Hi Lilienstein,
I am afraid that I am not sure which kind of the graph you want to create.
Do you want to create a 2D function plot? http://www.originlab.com/doc/Origin-Help/PD-Dialog-2DFunc-Tab
Or you just want to plot a 2D graph with a column, and this columns value from other two columns? For example, In a graph, Column A is X, and column D is Y. And calculate the values Column D= Column B*Column A + Column C. Then you plot the dataset in Column D If so, you can use set "Set Column Value" tool to get the value for ColumnD.
And if you want to get the minimun value of in a 2D plot, you can try to use the Statistics Gadget: http://www.originlab.com/doc/Origin-Help/Gadget-Statistics
