Hi!
I am doing some column plots of rainfall data for different years. In the x axis I have major ticks every week and minor ticks for every day. When I plot the data corresponding to the first year, each column is placed between two ticks, while when I do it for the second year, each column is in top of one tick (which is how I want it to be). Why is this happening if I have not modified any settings? Why the placement of the columns vs.the X-axis ticks is not consistent?

You're welcome Aida! Glad you found a workaround.
My supervisor has also suggested that if you open the column properties (dbl-click on header) for your data and set your date format to display with hours and minutes as well, you might find your data is set to 00:00 for each respective date.
However the tick marks on your axis may be from 12:00:00.000 for their range, so if you go into the axis dialog after modifying your date format, you might also be able to adjust the tick marks by setting the From and To to be at ##/##/## 00:00:00.000 for the given date range, rather than midday.

Hi Ken,
After arranging the x-ranges so that they match exactly in size, the problem remains the same:
But after trying a bit I found that the problem is because I had defined the major ticks by 1 week intervals and the minor by count. If I change it to match my dataset then the ticks are placed in the middle of the column :)

Hi Biloba,
The intervals of the tick-marks are relative to the number of points of x-data, because the two ranges of dates are slightly different in size, the tick marks aren't adjusted exactly alike. One way to correct for this is to double click on the axes and define them as the same range. Or in that same dialog you can set major ticks to display "By Custom Positions" if you really want to keep these axes in the same place relative to your data.
E.g. You have x values 4 and 5, your tick mark will display between them is if it's set to mark 4.5.
After defining a series of custom ticks and/or a custom interval for your x-axis, you could set the "rescale" option to manual. Then, closing out of the axis dialog, you can right-click on the title bar of your graph window and save this as a template which you could use to plot other data of a similar scope (obviously adjusting labels for the correct date).
This is just one idea, perhaps one of my coworkers can further elaborate on this.
