Posted - 02/18/2004 : 07:02:34 AM Dear All,
I have a problem in Origin 7.0, working from an excel workbook with several worksheets. If anybody could help me out, I would be grateful.
After making a scatterplot of data from sheet 1 in a Excel-workbook, I want to add more plots to the same layer using data from the other sheets in the same workbook. However (and this is the problem) when I go into 'plot associations', only the data columns of the *first* sheet are available through the 'Associated Data Set List Box'. The data columns of all the later sheets are missing! I therefore cannot insert data columns from the other sheets using the '<->X','<->Y' etc. buttons.
I have checked the 'Worksheet drop-down list' for the other sheets, but they are not there. Other Work*books* and Origin-worksheets are there as normal, though.
I can access the missing data columns/sheets through the 'add/remove plot' dialog box (=double click on layer # box in the plot), but this dialog box does not allow me to specify the correct X column without rearraging all of my data.
Is the only way around this to make more layers and stack them?
Any help or comment is apreciated, Thanks! |

Posted - 02/20/2004 : 03:57:08 AM Hi,
thanks for your advice!
Unfortunately, there still are some problems. First of all, regarding 'stacking more layers' as we discussed, Sammi, I tried this and found that Origin does not acknowledge sheets 2 and up AT ALL in the 'Plot associations' dialog box, even when i make a new layer. Therefore, as you said, my only recourse is to make new Workbooks, one for each of my (SEVERAL) sheets. But, it works (i suppose)!
Regarding your suggestions, Laurie: 1) It works, and it's a nice way of adding new data to a plot. Unfortunately, it requires (as far as I have tried for now) that the X-column is the first column of the block, and it has to be one continuous block, not, e.g. two columns seperated by other columns. It works, but again i have to rearrange all my data (but yes, should have thought of that before i entered them!:-)
2) This would seem to be a perfect solution, but for some reason it does not work. I highlight the columns, enter the data as i would normally. Then i activate the plot (didn't know this option, good one!) and the 'add plot' button appears. I press it, and...nothing! No data are entered into the plot! No change has happened in the data in the 'plot associations' box! It works fine for sheet one, and other workbooks, but again sheets 2 and more fail to respond.
It all boils down to that there are some problems for Origin to recognize the 'lower' sheets in some circumstances, while elsewhere it does detect them (such as in the 'add/remove plot', but here you can't specify the X-column etc.)
Ah well, I'll try and do what I can, just too bad it couldn't be easier (lazy me). But indeed thanks for your time, comments and ideas, I learned from them!

Posted - 02/19/2004 : 2:01:37 PM There is more than one way of adding data from another Excel sheet to an existing graph layer.
1. You can simply drag-n-drop the data onto the graph. (Highlight the selected data from Excel and then place the cursor on the lower right corner of the selected block of data and drag it onto the graph.)
2. Go to Excel and plot from the second sheet in the same way as you did from the first sheet, using the Select Data for Plotting dialog. But, before you click Plot, make your graph active. Notice that the Plot button now changes to an Add Plot button.
Hope this helps.

As I know, at present, origin does not support making a scatter plot of data into same layer from an excel workbook with several worksheets. To make a single layer, you should either divide the several worksheets in a same excel into some independent worksheets, or workbooks. And, as you said, you can also make more layers first, and then merge into one graph with several layers.
Thanks, Sammi
