I plotted a graph inside a project file and saved it as a template.
Then I needed to plot similar graphs using data in the worksheets of the same project file. What I did is: clicked "Template" tool bar, then added my newly created template into the library, clicked "Plot", and selected the data series I needed. However, what popped up is still the default line template of the Origin. I can open the template file (.otp) in origin and it looks all right.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is? I am using O7, SR1.

Perhaps you should apply the SR4 patch.

I did try to select the columns first, then plot using the template I created. However, nothing happened. I mean no graph even plotted and not window show up. The Origin just keep dead.

I get similar results in 0rigin 7 SR4...

1. Add template to library.
2. With wks active but no columns selected, Plot->Template Library.
3. Select my tempate, then the datasets and Plot.

The resulting plot is almost right and if I try "Save Template" the dialog claims it's my template, but ticks and tick labelling are clearly wrong. However, if I select columns in the wks before I pick from the Template Library then the axes look like they should. So try selecting your datasets before you go to the library, not after.

Note: In Origin 7.5 it doesn't matter which order you use. The plot is correct both ways.
