Hi, Everybody --

I have a 6-panel line+symbol scatterplot here, with three datasets plotted on each panel. I'm trying to get one of the symbol sets (triangles) in each panel to print with a light gray fill (the borders are black). I set up the fill color with the Symbol Tab in the Plot Details dialog like a good boy, but no joy -- they all print with a solid black fill on my HP LaserJet 6M. As a related item, I also built two pseudo-legends for this figure, and there's a triangle symbol in each of them; I drew them with the polygon tool. Same thing happens with them: solid black, not a gray traingle to be found. HowEVER -- I can print the same figure on an HP PSC750, and everything is as it should be, with gray triangles galore.

The LaserJet DOES work right (that is, the triangles are gray) if I print the figure after saving it as a JPG, so I can't believe that it's a printer-driver problem.

Any idea what gives?

Thanks as always --

Mark

Hi Mark,

Glad it worked. We see this from time to time and I have no idea why it works. The in-house joke is that this is the "If this doesn't work, try the other one" check box. Someone with more knowledge as to how printer drivers work might be able to explain it, but I can't.

To get the "official" explanation of this control, consult Origin Help file topic = Presentations, Printing, and Graphic Export > Printing > The Print Dialog Box (When the Graph, Function Graph, or Layout Page Window is Active).

Hey, Mike --

That worked! Now, the question of the hour is... why? If the printer isn't color-capable, does Origin default to pure black and pure white? That's my simple-minded guess, for what it's worth.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I didn't even notice that gray-scale option.

Hi Mark:

I really don't know "what gives," but try this: Choose File:Print and select the Enable color as gray scale check box (in this case, you have to ignore what the check box actually says). Then, try printing on the LaserJet 6.
