Origin Version (Select Help-->About Origin): 7.5SR5
Operating System: XP

I have prepared a scatter graph and “dyed” the symbols using colour mapping. In addition I alos displayed the colour scale bar. This works well. Now, I would like to graph a second data set in a new layer using the same style. Also, this layer should have its own colour mapping which differs from the first one (i.e. number of levels). This is also possible. However, how can I add a second colour scale bar which then corresponds to layer 2?

My apologies. I made this more difficult than it is.

You should be able to create something like a 2 panel graph and create a separate color scale for each layer (just click the layer icon to activate the layer, then click the Color Scale button on the Graph toolbar). In this case, Origin does allow two scales with the same name.

Now, I'm not sure what I did when I first tried this. Anyway, let us know if you have problems.

Hi Carsten,

When you add a color scale to your graph, Origin assigns a name to the color scale object -- in this case, I think it is "SPECTRUM1." As you probably found out, there can only be one color scale on a page because the page can't accomodate two color scale objects with the same name. So, I think the best way to handle this is to do this:
  1. Create two separate graphs, each with its own color scale.
  2. Right click on the color scale of one of the graphs, choose Label Control and change the Object Name to something else (don't try to name it with some variation of "Spectrum" as I don't think that will work).
  3. Merge the two graphs (Edit:Merge all Graph Windows).

You could also combine both graphs on a Layout Page, but you wouldn't have as much control over the proportions of the two graph layers, so this may not be as satisfactory as my first suggestion.
