Posted - 04/29/2005 : 06:55:14 AM I checked that an update for matlab console is avilable. It now supports pwr etc. command which is one of my wish list (posted previously here). But does it support gwr, gws etc. Actually, Instead of getting matlab matrix on origin matrix, it often necessary to put the data directly on the worksheet. does it support now? or I am doing something wrong? The origin staff or anyone please clarify this issue.
Also, the console would be great if it supports copy and paste within previous command and scrolling support so that one does not need to type the same command again and again.
thanks Rezahasi1 |

Yes, the special commands such as pr only work inside the Origin MATLAB console dialog.
If you are doing all the number crunching in MATLAB and bringing the data over only for graphing in Origin, then there are a couple of other options to look at, maybe you have already considered these: 1> Save the workspace in MATLAB as a .mat file and then use File->Import to open the file in Origin, select the vars you want to bring over to Origin, and then graph them. 2> Run Origin as a Automation (COM) server from MATLAB. So at the end of your .m file code, you can launch Origin and push data into Origin wks/mat etc.
For either of the above, I recommend getting the SR5 service release for 7.5. For option 2 above, there is an example of this under the \Samples\AutomationServer\MATLAB subfolder.

Posted - 04/30/2005 : 11:57:51 PM Hi Easwar, Thanks for your reply.
I would love to see the scrolling support in the MATLAB console in Origin, since gr, pr etc command are not recognized by the MATLAB from the MATLAB Commad window. Like i often use gr [timestepall deltall] this way. By the way, I am a heavy user of MATLAB, but rely mostly on Origin for graphical presentation of Final Results (But limited mostly to 2D. Also, why Origin has not been extended to use finite element data visualization?). Thanks. Reza |

Posted - 04/29/2005 : 09:38:08 AM Hi Rezahasi1,
The updated version of MATLAB console is at: http://www.originlab.com/FileExchange/details.aspx?C=5&cid=17&fid=98
Currently this update provides only commands to send worksheet column data to MATLAB variables. As for getting MATLAB data back into Origin worksheet columns, you need to use the GUI. Click on the Import button on this console dialog. That will show a list of all MATLAB variables. You can then select the ones you want to transfer to Origin and bring the data in.
We will work on adding commands to bring data in from MATLAB to Origin worksheets so the GUI need not be used.
As for issues such as scrolling support, I would suggest that you directly use the MATLAB command window instead. This console has limitations and perhaps there is not much point in us supporting all that the MATLAB command window does, when you can just use the command window itself.
The main thing to keep in mind is that for the data transfer to occur, MATLAB has to be launched from Origin so that the two are connected. So start Origin first, then use the Tools->MATLAB console to launch MATLAB. Then, you will see that when MATLAB launches, the MATLAB command window is available in the Task bar - it will be there in minized form. You can just pop up the MATLAB command window and start using that instead of the console. Then when you are ready to bring in the variables from MATLAB to Origin, go to the console and click the Import button.
Note also that you can type the command "desktop" in the MATLAB command window (or for that matter in the Origin console dialog) to pop up the MATLAB desktop interface.
