Origin Version (Select Help-->About Origin): 7.5

Experienced guys please tell us how to make the best selections for exporting a figure for publication. Below is what I think should be considered:
1) Size. Papaers usually require maximum column width <8.4cm. Please tell us how to set the "print dimension" of figure and the exporting ratio. Precise numbers are favoured.
2) Font. Some selections I dont understand, like "Adobe type", build-in or outline(I found outline looks bad and don't know their meaning), true type or not, thickness, etc, and to maintain the proper font size (8point minimum), what should be the size in Origin.
3) Resolution. I chose 300dpi.

In all, please give us a review about the setting of styles and exporting methods. Thanks a lot.

Thanks, that really works! I found layout transforms the graphs into bitmap and they cannot be edited any more. But still, it looks great.

Tools : Layer is a tool which can be used to Move or Swap layers.

There is a Layer property at the Display level that controls the way Elements scale (including text) when resizing a Layer. So a Layer that was reduced 50% in size would have its fonts reduced as well, so a 36 pt font would appear to be only 18 pt. Changing the display of elements to use Fixed Scale with a factor of 1 would mean fonts display at their 'true' size. You could make a theme with just these two items:
Page.AllLayers.Display.Scale = Fixed Factor
Page.AllLayers.Display.Fixed Factor = 1

That is nice to know. I tried merging by minimizing unneeded graphs, still, it doesn't work properly. Some layers are white with no contents and the size is not right, and more, it's hard to control the order.
So I tried the tedious way to plot all graphs on one page by manually setting the positions for different layers. It works well when the sizes of all the graphs are the same; when they are different, the font is a problem. For example, I select the width for one layer to be 50% and the other 30%, and select font size to be 36 for both, the text on the second layer looks smaller. Does that mean the points of the font is based on layer size? I guess "points" is an absolute unit. Is there a better way to solve this problem?

I think what we need is a theme that contains all regulations to ensure good appearance for publication. There is a "physical review letter" theme, but it has only several properties. Does someone have such a good theme? please send to me, thanks.

Here is an old article that has some information on formats:

and here are some links concerning size:

A note about PDF:
The P in PDF was supposed to stand for Portable, but that hasn't worked out too well. Adobe and Microsoft got together and tried to improve things with "Open Type" - a better version of "True Type" - and they succeeded . . . somewhat.
Our PDF export was written by another company and the only advice I can give is to use "Outline" which seems to work much better than "Embedded" (which might work in an all Adobe environment) or "Descriptor" (which definitely fails when chosen fonts do not exist on both systems.)

I forgot to mention, sometimes several figures should be combined in one file, do you use other software to do this?
