Dear all,
how does the F-test in Origin work? Which parameters of the data sets does it compare? Is it appropriate to use on any data sets?

Thank you! :) That is, what I need.

To compare datasets based on same model, you need this app. The page also contains the formula of F-test in such case.

Thank you for staying in the discussion.

Generally, if the null hypothesis is correct, means the variances are the same, the datasets are not different.

In the case of comparing models, the two datasets of sum of squares are compared to the degrees of freedom with the dataset of the original model and the dataset of the varied model.

But how is it done in the case of "Compare datasets"? We have two different datasets and two sets of variables belonging to the fitted model. Which sum of squares do I compare in this case?

If you mean F-test in ANOVA, then the null hypothesis is the mean difference among all groups are not significant different.

Thank you.

I would like to know the background of the calculation. Which hypothesis is tested in F-test, that compares datasets?

Origin has ANOVA analysis that has F-test to compare multiple datasets (menu Statistics->ANOVA). On your second question, you may go to menu Statistics->Stats Advisor and this tool will help you to find the stats tool to use. See below:
