Hello!

I am trying to figure out how to make a plot like this one:

https://www.xrite.com/-/media/modules/weblog/blog/lab-color-space/lab-color-space.png?h=622&w=600&la=en&hash=53A76941BAB3015346FAB3689739E967843CF8EA

or this one:

https://pubs.acs.org/cms/10.1021/acs.jchemed.7b00681/asset/images/medium/ed-2017-00681n_0005.gif

where I can effectively scatter plot the a* and b* of CIELAB 1976 coordinates on a circular CIELAB hue wheel, with an adjacent 1D L* scatter plot for L* values, and add data labels or a color identifier to show the different data points from the data set.

I cannot figure out how to do this and would appreciate your help.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi varbird,

We updated Chromaticity Diagram app (v1.82):
https://www.originlab.com/fileexchange/details.aspx?fid=446

Now it can support CIELAB polar graph. You needn't create it manually.

Click the third L*a*b* Plot button in the app's toolbar. Select Goal: 2D Polar Plot from the opened dialog.

It requires minimum version Origin 2022(9.9) for the graph. In Origin 2025(10.2), it provides a dialog to plot. For the version lower than 2025(10.2), it provides a project template to create the graph.

Thanks.

Hi varbird,

You can check the attached project file.
https://my.originlab.com/ftp/forum_and_kbase/Images/2DScatterPolar.opju

Follow steps below to add the circle curve:
1. Column D and E in Book1 are the circle curve created with formula in Origin's Set Column Values dialog (In this example radius=60).
2. Right click on Graph1's Layer icon and select Layer Contents from the short-cut menu. Select Line Plot and add Coulmn E to Layer1.
3. Double click on the circle curve. In Plot Details dialog's Line tab, check Enable and select Exclusive broken by missing values in Fill Area Under Curve tab.

If you have more more questions about it, please let me know.

Best regards,
Sam

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your reply. This seems to work, however, for getting the polar plot, I am having difficulty understanding how to do this step that is noted inside the sample file for this tool:

"Add a circle curve to the graph, check Fill Area Under Curve and select Exclusive broken by missing values in Plot Details dialog. 2D polar plot for a*b* data will be created as above."

How exactly do I "add a circle curve to the graph" for this to work?

I'd appreciate your detailed instruction.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Hi varbird,

Chromaticity Diagram app can create such a graph with a fixed L*.
https://www.originlab.com/fileExchange/details.aspx?fid=446

You can see the 2nd graph in the above page's Description section.

Right click on the app icon in Origin's Apps Gallery window, and select Show Samples Folder. Open LABDoc.opju file. In the Notes window's 2D Scatter Plot section, it shows how to create the Polar Plot in the app.

We will improve the app to provide an option to create the plot directly so that users don't need several steps.

Thanks.

Hello varbird,

Thank you for the inquiry. We have a Chromaticity app:
https://www.originlab.com/fileExchange/details.aspx?fid=446
but it currently does not support polar plot. We will look into supporting it.

Would you be able to share some sample data? You can send us data and continue the discussion via a support ticket. Click the link below to start a ticket:

You can refer to this forum post in the ticket.

Thank you!

Hi,

I suppose you want to plot a polar contour? Please press F11 to open Learning Center, then select Graph Samples: Polar Charts: Plot Contour. You can double-click to open the sample project and it has a tutorial inside to show you how to plot this chart.

Regards, Yuki
