I’m wondering if it’s possible to display axis tick labels in LaTeX format.

Do you know if it will be possible in the future to format the numbers used for axis tick labels directly in LaTeX?

Yes, you can add LaTeX to worksheet cells and use it as axis tick labels. See below:
