Hello,

some of "my" users reported an issue where data seems to "disappear" from Origin project files (.opju) from time to time.
I am trying to figure out, if this is technical issue or "user error" and in either way how to prevent it.

What we observe:
- Some workbooks/sheets are missing when reopening a project
- The project structure is still present, but certain datasets or books seem to be gone
- This happens sporadically and is hard to reproduce

Environment:
- OriginPro 2023 / 2024
- Windows 11
- Project files are typically stored on a network drive (SMB share)

We are trying to understand whether this is:
- a known limitation or risk when working with OPJ/OPJU files on network drives
- or more likely caused by user workflow issues

We would like to understand:
- whether this behavior is known in Origin
- if there are recommended best practices to avoid this
- and whether this is considered a technical limitation or user-side misuse

Any clarification or guidance would be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

Thank you for your fast and detailed answer.
I was able to reproduce the behavior you were describing, so i will let the users know about this potential pitfall.

But our issue seems to be different, as users were reporting this even for non-connector-worksheets (no connector symbol). Also if the data is not stored users still have a chance to reproduce from the path to the file.

My attempts to reproduce this issue were not yet successful.

Hello,

It's a setting in Origin. By default if data file is large, Origin excludes data file in project so the opju file size can be small.
After importing data, u can click the data connector icon on upper-left corner of worksheet, for large data, the "Exclude Imported when Saving" is checked while for small data, the checkbox isn't checked.
That's why sometimes you see the issue but sometimes not.

You can watch this video to get a better understanding of it. https://youtu.be/7Gdqo-uB1eE

There is a system variable @dns to control it.
Set @dns=1 will always save data in project file.
https://www.originlab.com/doc/en/LabTalk/ref/sys-var-list?f=dl

We are working on showing this control in Preferences: Options dialog's Miscellaneous tab in the coming Origin 2026b so user can easily check exclude or not exclude form GUI instead of using system variable.

Thanks, Snow
