Origin Ver. and Service Release (Select Help-->About Origin): 2026 PRO
Operating System: W11 Pro

Hi,
The meaning and operation of short and long names is somewhat confusing to me. The existence of a third parameter, simply defined as "Name," makes things more difficult. I've noticed that short names don't allow all the characters (e.g., parentheses) that long names allow. However, it's not entirely clear to me how the names are mutually exclusive. For example, in a folder, I have a workbook with the long name DR-t (short name "Book10"). I also have a chart with the short name DR-t (no long name).

I would like to do the same for another workbook-graph pair and name it DR-MR. Unfortunately, when I try to assign the short name "DR-MR," I get this window.

What's the deal with these names, and why do we need the additional "Name" property? How can I control this?

Kind regards,
Dominik

Hi Chao,
Are you sure the '-' character is not allowed in the short name? Please take a look to my first screen and this one I shot today:

Kind regards,
Dominik

Hello Dominik,

Here are the restrictions for Short Names: https://docs.originlab.com/origin-help/childwindow-names/

Short Names can only contain letters and number so the '-' is not valid.

No, Short Names cannot be blank. Short Names are the internal identity of the object and used by Origin for many of its functions.

Best,
Chao

Hi Snow,
This is fact is missing in video, I suppose. The idea of Name, SN and LN is now clear to me, however, in my project there is no "Window" with SN="DR-MR" but I still cannot rename graph with SN="DRMR" to "DR-MR". Why?
Next question, is it possible to remove SN and leave it blank?

Best regards
Dominik

Hi Dominik,

Here is the rule for Name column.
* Show Long Name (LN) when as long as there is long name.
* Show Short Name (SN) if there is no LN

When you single click on a Name in Name column to edit the name, there is SN and LN indicator after the edit box to indicating what you are editing.
U can click on the SN or LN indicator to switch.

This video may be helpful https://www.originlab.com/videos/details.aspx?id=321

In general, Short name must be unique in the whole project, no matter it's book, graph, matrix, notes, etc.

The video also shows u can set system variable @PERB=0 so that when clicking on a name in Name column in PE, it will always be renaming the Long Name.

Thanks, Snow
