Operating System:windows XP
How can I do a contour graphic? I mean, I have 4 columms of values, but I want two of them (which do have a relation with themselves) to be labelled as "y" in a new graphic, while the remaining two columns, should be labelled as "x" in the new graphic. The resulting graphic should have contour representations (transverstal cuts)of a 3D representation. I hope you could help me!! |

Thanks a lot to all of you! I have already got the graphic I wanted. I obtained it indirectly, by entering the data in an excel sheet and then putting it in a matrix sheet in the origin program. Firstly, I organized the data as a double-entry table and then I copied the data in a matrix sheet in the origin program. The graphic can be plotted in both, excel and origin programs. Thanks a lot to all of you!! |

Probably it won't work, but dare to say from a speculation, have you consider an XYXY Vector plot, which has a pair of X and Y values, and another pair of X and Y for an arrow to represent a composition of two (energy) magnitudes?

Thanks a lot for your answer. Yes, I want to perform that kind of graphic. I have obtained energy values from a scan, by varying a definite dihedral angle. Each angle has one energy value. But, by varying another dihedral angle, (each dihedral angle has one energy value), I can have a picture of the hypothetical energy surface of the molecule. I do not want a 3D image of that surface (I think I could obtain it), I just want to plot the graphic you mentioned in your reply. So, that graphic should have a Y axis cointaining the representation of dihedral angle 1 vs their corresponding energy values, while X should represent the dihedral angle 2 values vs their corresponding energy values. I am afraid it still sounds complicated to understand. Thanks anyway!!! |

What Larry describes is called a contour graph in Origin. As you say, you want to plot a horizontal slice of the full contour plot. However, it's still unclear why you have two X and two Y columns.

Thanks a lot Larry! But I think the information you gave me is useful to plot 3D graphics, no contour graphics. The graphic I want could be imagined as an horizontal cut of a 3D graphic. Thanks anyway, it is good to know that we have a place where help can be found.

I am not quite sure your problem, however, it should be make clear that data for creating a contour plot should be in XYZ form, where X and Y represents the coordinates in the plan and Z denotes the altitude. And then convert the worksheet into a matrix to plot it. So I am not sure why you have two X columns and two Y columns, can you make it clear?
