I was wondering why I Origin suddenly seemed to limit the length of a worksheet name (<6 chars). Finally, I could find a hint in Origin Help. However this statement is not really helpful.
Rules for assigning worksheet names and labels: window names... 1. must be unique. 2. cannot contain spaces. 3. must begin with a letter. 4. cannot contain special characters (i.e.|, @, #, %, etc.). 5. are limited in length -- worksheet or matrix = 13 spaces; graph, function, or layout = 24 spaces. 6. do not allow spaces between characters.
ad 1. OK ad 2. OK ad 3. OK
ad 4. what is etc.? Wouldn´t it more helpful to list the characters which are allowed? e.g. only A-Z, a-z, 0-9... What about Umlauts or accents? So, I had to test. They seemed to be allowed. So this help entry was not very helpful if I have to test it anyway.
ad 5. that's not fully correct. More helpful would be: the max. total length of a dataset is 24 characters, which is wksName_datasetName. If the wksName has a length of 13 the datasetName is limited to 10. If the datasetName (which seems to be limited to max. 18 chars) is 18 the wksName is limited to 5 chars. This depends on what name you are changing first.
ad 6. why again? It was alrady mentioned in 2.
This limited length brings me back to my question which I asked more than 3 years ago: http://www.originlab.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2433 Will there be longer wksNames allowed soon?
Wouldn´t it make sense to take the FAQs and such questions/comments as above to improve the help file? Will there be regularly updated help files for download?
Tilman.

Posted - 12/22/2006 : 09:01:03 AM Hi Tilman,
Thank you for pointing out the inconsistencies in the help file.
In the next version we will be adding support for long name property for Origin windows such as worksheet, graph, and also for worksheet data columns.
