why doesn't this script work? it seems simple enough.

loop (ii,3,wks.ncols) {
col(ii)=col(ii)*-1;
};

The col() function requires a literal column name or number for argument. In your case col(ii) refers to a column named "ii". For a variable argument you must the wcol() function instead...

loop (ii,3,wks.ncols) {
wcol(ii)=wcol(ii)*-1;
};
