Origin Version (Select Help-->About Origin): 7.5
Operating System: WIN 2K

I use the same dataset to generate a contour plot, describing densities of points, and a scatter plot. One should mean, that the contour plot shows the highest densities are where also the scatter plot shows them, but this is not the case.
Do not ask me why, but if anybody knows the problem and a possible solution, please help....
can show you the both graphs if needed...

Now it works.
It still costs some time, but i can handle that, thank you very much

Cheers,
Thomas

Hi:

There are several ways to show both contour and data. If using Vincent's "Two Layer" method, you should Link these two layers:

Double-click the graph to bring up Plot Details dialog, select Layer2 in the left panel. And then in the Link Axes Scales tab, link layer2 to layer1, and select X and Y link Axis as Straight (1 to 1).

Actually, since the data and the contour share the same scale, you can also use only one layer. For example, you can add the data from Layer Content:

Or you can directly drag and drop data to the contour:

Thanks

Hello Vincent,

I have tried your suggestions and the first part works well, but the merging of the two plot does not work properly.
When merging the description of x and y axis move, and the scaling is different, especially when i want to rescale the graph. Is it possible just to add a second layer whose scaling sticks to the first layer, so that you may reconfigure the graphs layout only once and not twice until everything is fitting together?

Hi thomaspreuth,

I don't see you data, so I suppose your data only have two columns (X column and Y column). If you want to have a contour plot to show the densities of your data points as the scatter plot shows. You can follow the steps below:
1. Highlight the two columns of your data. And then choose Edit: Convert to Matrix: 2D Binning. With this operation, Origin will divide the graph into several blocks according to your settings, and then it will count the number of the points in all the blocks(as the following image shows). At last, Origin will generate a Matrix containing the count results.

2. Activate the Matrix and select Plot: Contour Plot: Contour -Color Fill to get the contour plot you need. And then you can get a scatter plot from you original data and change its axis scale the same as contour plot. You can see that the contour containing the same information of the points' density as the scatter plot contains.

3. If you want to add a plot of the mean and standard deviation of the both columns to the contour plot, you can put the data in a row of a new worksheet containing 4 columns. The order of the data in the same row is as follows: mean of the X column, SD of the X column, mean of the Y column, SD of the Y column. Then you can designate the columns as X, XErr, Y, YErr using Set As option from context menu. Highlight all of the four columns to plot a Line graph.
4. Select Edit: Merge all Graph Window, click Yes on Attention Dialog. Then enter 1 in Number of Rows edit box in the next dialog and click OK. Accept the default setting of the next dialog. You can get the two plots in the same graph now. The result is as the above image shows.

If you still have question, please send your data to us or paste it on the forum if it has small rows.

Vincent
