Posted - 11/09/2009 : 12:52:50 PM I've just started using Origin, and I wanted to know if there was an easy way to solve self-consistent equations in the program.
For example, I need to find the solutions of x for the equation:
ax=tan(bx)
for given values of a and b. Any suggestions? |

Posted - 11/09/2009 : 10:57:46 PM Hi,
In 8.1, you can find the numerical solution in this way:
New a book
1. Initial guess the x range and resolution, for example col(1)={-10:0.1:10}
2. Write the equation in the form f(x) = 0 col(2)=tan(b*x) - a*x
3. Highlight the second column and use xf "levelcrossing"
Note that the roots were obtained by linear interpolation within each interval, you must specify the resolution by yourself. In 8.2 we may consider to provide a tool that will find roots by using binary search which means that the interval will be divided in half until or the root is found to a present precision.
