Origin Ver. and Service Release (Select Help-->About Origin): Origin 8 SR2
Operating System: Windows 7

Hi,

I need to convolve two data sets, and someone recommended Origin. I have an absorbance spectrum (absorbance vs energy) and a Guassian function.

I'm trying to use the Convolution tool (Analysis --> Signal Analysis --> FFT --> Convolution), but the results are very confusing to me.

Do the two data sets need to have the same "x" values? That is, the absorbance spectrum is 111 data points, while the Guassian is 41 data points.

Do the data sets need to have the same increments? That is, the absorbance values were not taken at evenly spaced energy values.

Thank you for any help!

Hi etoile,
The two data sets can be of different length. However, the X values or the sampling interval/increment of the datasets should be the same. Unfortunately, you are using Origin 8. If you are Origin 8.1, there is a decimation tool which can resample the datasets. With this tool, you can make the sampling rates of the datasets equal.

Yours sincerely
Alex
