I experience problems when printing origin 5.0 graphs with a HP color laserjet 5. The fonts are printed out larger than with my other printers (HP laerjet 4, Xerox 4920) but the character spacing is not increased and thus the characters overlap! It tried it with Arial and Time New Roman TT fonts and it happens with both. It does not happen with programmes like MS Word etc.
How to solve this problem?

In fact there is a standard driver: the postscript driver doesn't give problems at all! I just found out that the printer we have is PS compatible so that solves it!
(our technical service didn't give me the right driver).

The printer drivers are what directly affect what the final printed output looks like. The good news is, the Microsoft Print Preview, which is available in Origin 5.0 (File: Print Preview) now gives a good representation of what the final printed output will look like. As far as keeping everything looking the same from printer to printer, HP is working on that by trying to standardize on the HPGL (Hewlett Packard Graphics Language). Unfortunately, this will only work on graphics exchanged between HP Printers of the latest generation. It is more a question of the different printer manufacturers settling on a standard, than any one thing HP or Microsoft can do. |

Thanks Scott! Your story is absolutely correct! When I define the laserjet 5 as default and then create a plot, the fonts are a bit larger, but nicely proportioned. But when i then print on a xerox 4920 or laserjet 4, the characters become smaller but the spacing doesn't. I never noticed this problem before because the Xerox and the laserjet 4 seem to be 'compatible'. You mention that it is a Windows problem, but is it solvable? The laserjet 5 is a printer that I only use when I have to print a formal document so I don't like having it as the default printer all the time. Can either microsoft, or HP solve it?

When you create a graph with one
printer set as the default, and then print the graph
using a different printer, there are always changes
that occur. Origin uses the characteristics of the
default MS Windows printer to create the graph.
This includes information about the printer's default
fonts and graphic resolution. When Origin
creates a graph it looks at the default printer
resolution in both the X and Y-axis and determines
the number of dots that are needed to create
a graph of the correct dimensions. Once the graph is
generated it consists of the correct total number of
dots to have the graph appear a certain physical size. By the
way, this is a limitation caused by Windows. You
may have noticed that if you create an MS Word
document and have one printer set as the default and
then print the file to another printer, the
pagination will usually change. This is due to the
same factor. In your case it appears that the fonts are
being affected. If you set the color printer as the
default MS Windows printer and create a new
Origin project, are the fonts correctly sized and
proportioned? If they are not, please contact
