Urgent help needed! I need to open this file immediately!
I had a project with one Excel file running smoothly in one computer with version 8.5.0 SR1 and Win 7 32-bit installed. Trying to open the same file in a freshly installed 8.5.1 SR1 in another computer, Origin/Excel is behaving in a strange way. Both computers have Office 2010 installed. Trying to open the file in 8.5.1 SR1, Origin calls Excel, opens an Excel Window with the workbook inside, and asks if I want to Update the links. Regardless of the answer, it warns me that the file is already opened and asks me if I want to reopen the file. Regardless of the answer again, this reopen window keeps coming in in an infinite loop which is only broken if I close Origin.

I have the same problem and though frustrating as it is, I guess I'll just try re-installing Office in that "different way" and see what happens. |

We do not have a workaround for the infinite loop problem. We've not been able to reproduce it and do not understand why it is happening. I cannot think of anything other than to try to reinstall Excel 2010 on the offending computer in a different way (whatever the different way may be).

I apologize for this trouble. We will certainly fix this problem for the next Origin release.
Do you see the same "Origin is unable to detect..." problem on your other computer (the one on which you were able to open your project with one linked Excel book without the infinite loop)?

Excel is working properly inside Origin in the computer which originated the file. Is there a workaround for the second computer? In this computer Office has been installed using Microsoft Office download tool.

This appears to be a separate problem. We have been able to reproduce it on at least one of our computers (others are fine) with Excel 2010 and Win 7. There apparently exist different ways of installing Office 2010, so some cause Origin not to recognize Excel 2010 as properly installed.
I apologize for this trouble. We will certainly fix this problem for the next Origin release.
Do you see the same "Origin is unable to detect..." problem on your other computer (the one on which you were able to open your project with one linked Excel book without the infinite loop)?

So I installed the add-in but the outcome was exactly the same. Upon checking what else could be wrong, I noticed that if I open a new Excel in a blank Project, Origin alerts me that "Origin is unable to detect a proper installation of Excel on your computer. Please make sure that Excel is properly installed and then restart Origin". How to fix that? Obviously Excel 2010 is correctly installed (it's a fresh install) in the machine.

As I said in the previous post, the only external link (Excel treats it as a link) is a .xlm Add-in which is installed in an Excel local directory which is automatically loaded every time Excel starts (regardless if it's used by the worksheet or not).
Opening the same file in the other computer (where the file was generated), Excel takes a couple of seconds to open, enough for Origin to open a "Server busy" window. This reminds me that in another file that I created, upon opening the Excel file the same "Server busy" appeared also and entered an infinite loop depending on Excel's state but now I'm not sure of in what conditions. I have to investigate it more to give you more hints.
The other strange thing is that in the new Office an empty Excel instance remains opened after importing; that didn't happen with Excel 2003. Unfortunately I don't have the older version anymore to tell you how it would behave.

Hi LC_,
The Excel book obviously contains links to something. What are those links to? Are they links to other Excel books or something else?
Also, does it matter where the Origin project file you are trying to open is located, such as on a network drive somewhere, as opposed to a local disk (inside some folder reserved for the current user, with all the read/write permissions)?
By the way, we have not been able to reproduce the problem in the setup like yours.

Thanks for your answer. The Excel is internal to Origin. I usually use it this way.
Disabling the Automatic Updating, I receive a warning saying "this workbook contains one or more links that cannot be updated". Now
a) if I click on Continue, the same infinite loop of opening files is created like before.
b) if I click on Edit links, sometimes it will enter the infinite loop and others it will let the workbook opened in Excel but Origin will be kept busy waiting for Excel forever.
After investigating, the only additional information I could find is that the missing link is an external component with some macros which the other computer has and this doesn't yet - will install it tomorrow, but this shouldn't cause an infinite loop, should it? In the other computer I usually don't update any external links when prompted and it doesn't seem to enter this infinite loop.

Hi LC_,
I wonder if you could try the following workaround in Excel 2010:
1. Run standalone Excel and click on File . Select Options.
2. On the ensuing "Excel Options" dialog select "Advanced" on the left bar, scroll down to the checkbox "Ask to update automatic links" and uncheck it. Hit OK to close the "Excel Options" dialog.
3. Exit Excel.
4. Run Origin and try again to open the same project. Is there any difference in behavior?
Also, is the Excel book inside Origin internal or external? To see that, right-click on the titlebar of any Excel book opened inside Origin and select properties. What do you see?
