Origin Ver. and Service Release (Select Help-->About Origin): 8.5.1
Operating System: win 7
..........................
I want to change the default scatter plot symbol and size (which is now black, filled square and size 9) to say, circle, not filled, size = 7.
How do I change that ? So that, next time when I select a column and click on the scatter symbol at toolbar, my graph is plotted with empty circles of size 7 instead of black filled squares of size 9.

Hi AB,

When you change the graph type from Scatter to Line, then back from Line to Scatter, it doesn't remember the symbol shape though the color and size of the symbol are recoverable. I will ask our developers to fix this problem.

Meanwhile you can first copy the graph format as a theme, then you can reapply it by pasting:
1) In the original scatter, right-click and choose "Copy Format> Symbol,Line,Fill" shortcut.
2) After you change the plot from scatter to line, back to scatter, you can "Paste" the copied format by right-clicking on the graph, and choose "Paste Format" shortcut.

Hi AB,

First two things:
1) Each graph type has own template file. So, Scatter's is SCATTER.otp, and Line's is LINE.otp .
2) Template is applied ONLY when the graph is created. It is predefined, and static application. (On the contrary, "theme" is dynamic and applicable anytime. "System Theme" is always applied (when applicable) after the graph is created based on the template.)

So, no wonder that changing the plot type to Scatter from Line didn't look at your template customization.

Thanks, it helps, but not completely.
I have done the way you said and can plot as I want after selecting a column and clicking on the scatter plot button on the toolbar.
Now the strange thing is if I change to line plot (by clicking the line button from toolbar) and again come back to scatter (by clicking the scatter button), instead of getting empty circles of size 7 i get empty squares of size 7 !!!!

Hi AB,

You can save your customized scatter plot as a Scatter's default template. To do so, make your scatter plot, choose "File: Save Template As" menu, then press OK WITHOUT changing the name from its default "SCATTER". From the next time to create a scatter plot, Origin will take your customized template (save in your User Files Folder where Origin looks it first before seeing your Origin installation place; Therefore you don't have to worried about loosing the original template. To go back to the original, you can delete Scatter.OTP in your User Files Folder.)
