I select "text from dataset" to create the x axis tick labels for my graph. Some non numerical text overlaps the number values, so that I can't read all the numbers on the x-axis. Why? How do I get rid of the letters?
When I do a linear plot on the data (absorbance in the y axis plotted against wavelength in the X axis), the numbers of each wavelength value appear as they should. However, a word and some symbols also appear on the graph. Usually the word "$configuration" overlaps some of the numbers on the x axis. The text changes when I limit the size of the data set to include only half, or when I plot 5 series against the x axis. I believe that "text from dataset" is the best option for the type of tick labels. How do I get rid of this non-numerical text over my tick labels? |

Posted - 08/26/2011 : 4:00:39 PM Hi collagen,
Not sure exact situation you're having, but "Text from Dataset" option for axis tick labels simply place the text at the certain cell in the column you have specified. Origin Help explains this as:
"Text from Dataset: Uses a data set as the source of the tick labels. You can select a data set from any worksheet in the project by typing or selecting the data set from the Data set combination box (for example, data1_c). For each major tick label, Origin checks what the tick label value of numeric type would be (using the settings on the Scale tab). It then uses that numeric value as a row number, and displays the cell value in the selected data set at that row number for the tick label"
So, what appears on the tick is simply the text from the cell straightforwardly. If they overlap, it's because they are too long or too close to the neighbor labels. You may try to rotate (say 90 degree) the tick label.
If your situation happened because of an old bug in Origin 6.0, I cannot help you. As far as I tried in my Origin 8.5.1, it worked as the above description says.
