I am using Windows NT4 and MS Office 98 and I can't open Excel in Origin 5. Does anyone else have the same problem, or have they managed to fix it?
It claims that Excel is already open (which it isn't) after that I have to restart Windows otherwise Excel gives me problems.

Fred Gates

Thank you for the advice. The problem seems to be with NT security, things work correctly if I give myself administrator rights otherwise, the problem remains.

Response to Opening Excel

Fred Gates,

I believe you may have reported your version of MS Office incorrectly. As far as I know, the Office 98 product is Macintosh compatible only. Since this is the case, I can only assume that you have either Office 97 or Office 95.

Nevertheless, I can tell you that there is a known problem with opening Excel within Origin. In most cases this problem is not Origin related. Rather, it is either Microsoft Excel related, or due to an incorrect installation of the Excel product (i.e. human error). To test out these theories, we have created a troubleshooting guide. This guide can be found by using our new searchable Knowledge Base. To see what I mean, click on the link I have provided. Once there, enter or select the following for steps 1 through 4.

  1. Excel

  2. Excel Workbooks

  3. Tip

  4. 5.0

Once you have completed the form, click the Submit Query button and two entries should come up. Click on the link called Using Excel in Origin 5.0 to get the the troubleshooting guide. If after having gone through all of these procedures you still can't get Excel to open inside Origin, I think your best bet would be to contact Microcal Software Technical Support. To do so, either click on the link provided, or call (800) 969-7720 and press option 2. Either way, be sure to provide (or be prepared to provide) the following information:

  • your Origin serial number,

  • the results of each of the tests in the troubleshooting guide(referenced by procedure number),

  • the version of Origin 5.0 you are using (whether it be the release, SR1, or SR2),

  • your operating system (Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT), and

  • the version of Excel you are trying to open inside Origin (since it most likely isn't from Office 98).

Knowing this information ahead of time (and without having to consult the Forum inquiry) will help provide you with a timely and accurate response.

Thank you,

Ryan Toomey
