when I export a graph to a wmf I cannot control the size of the wmf generated.
This sometimes results in a worsening of the graph itself (e.g. when I have to enlarge a small wmf I lose details of the plot)

A WMF file is by definition a vector graphics format. This means that as you enlarge the image, the information contained within the WMF will recalculate the length and direction of the various elements. There should be no loss of detail. This scaling will only properly occur when the program that you import the file into is capable of keeping the image as a WMF.

You do not specify the version on Origin that you are using, nor the application that you are inserting the WMF image file into. You mention that you are unable to control the size of the image. The image size will not be reported by containers (receiving applications) such as Microsoft Word or CorelDraw 9 if you paste the picture, but it will be reported if the graph is exported to a file and then inserted into these applications. It turns out, though, that Microsoft Word automatically resizes the inserted picture to a reasonable size. However, CorelDraw seems to be less predictable. If necessary, manually resize the inserted picture in CorelDraw.

In later versions of Origin you can access a scaling factor for the size of an exported Origin Graph. This is done from the menu bar by selecting Tools: Options: Page Tab: Copy:/Export Page Settings Ratio. The default is set to 40% meaning the exported image axes length will be 40% smaller than the frame size of the original graph. If you increase this to a value of 200%, this will reproduce the graph created by the file to be twice the size of the original graph.

Every image format does have a minimum increment or resolution between points. This can be defined in some fraction of an Inch, Pixels, Points…etc. This could possibly affect the WMF if it were exported with a very small frame size and then re-scaled an extreme amount. However it is uncommon to re-scale so much that this becomes noticeable. If you feel this might be happening you can change the Copy:/Export Page Settings Ratio to a larger number from the default. Try 200% and see how that looks. In Version 6.1 of Origin, there are some Advanced Settings available on the Page tab. These settings can also be used to enhance the output of an Origin graph. By opening this Dialog box and pressing the F1 key you will see a context sensitive help file regarding these options.

NOTE: Some programs do not have the ability to display a WMF directly. When you import the file, the program you are using to display the data might convert the WMF to a Raster graphic. PhotoShop will do this when a WMF is copied from the clipboard to a PhotoShop document. The image is converted to 72 DPI. If you enlarge this image, you will definitely see degradation of the image. My solution to this is to export the image from Origin at a 400% Copy:/Export Page Settings Ratio. The image will come in 4X large, but when I re-scale it in PhotoShop to its original size, the resolution will then affectivity be 288 DPI which is an acceptable value for a high quality image. It is possible that the program you are inserting the Origin graph into is rasterizing the image in this way.

If you are still unable to generate an acceptable image I recommend that you contact your local Origin dealer. Obtaining your location from the Email address provided by your profile, you should contact:
