I have the following setup:
Origin 6.0, service pack 4
MS Office 2000, SR2
Windows ME
HP Pavilion 6736 system

I have a document in word that has embedded Origin graphs; the document is on a shared drive across the network. I right-click the graph, and choose to Edit it. Origin launches (why always a new Origin launch for each graph, incidentally?), I edit the graph. I click on Update, and the networked document is properly updated. If I then exit Origin, the program quits but also gives me an "Error in MSVCRT.DLL" message. If I do this 5-6 times over the course of editing the document, eventually Word becomes unable to save files - it always tells you you are out of disc space, even though you are not. If I do not exit Origin, then this does not occur. I must reboot to fix the saving problem - big hassle!

I have tried replacing the MSVCRT.DLL file, but windows will not allow me to, claiming that it is in use, even when I have no other programs running. WinME should have a very up-to-date version anyway...

Any solutions or workarounds to this?

For technical questions, try emailing
Tech Support directly.
Provide details of exactly how to reproduce a problem. (i.e. more than what is provided here.)

There is not enough information in this post to definitively say what the problem is, but I will make a guess based on experience ...

Your post does not mention Linking, so I will assume we are dealing with an Embedded graph.
I am guessing that the graphs were not embedded either via the Clipboard or by inserting an OGG file - those are the documented procedures.
I think you have probably made the mistake of inserting a graph through an OPJ file.
This is not documented and should probably be documented as not possible.

The curious part is that it seems to work.
You (probably) picked an OPJ file, clicked OK and saw a graph in your Word document.
Unfortunately (in this case), Origin supports many graph (child) windows in a project file and there is no defined mechanism for deciding which graph to pick.
What happens when you edit these embedded graphs is the real problem.
After editing the embedded graph and updating your document everthing seems OK, but then all bets are off.

[*]You might exit Origin without a problem.
[*]You might exit Origin and get an MSVCRT.DLL crash.
[*]You might exit Origin and get an Origin crash.

(2) and (3) may happen sequentially.
What may also happen - and won't be evident - is that Origin is 'hanging around' invisibly in a crashed state and the MSVCRT.DLL remains loaded by Windows (and therefore can not be deleted or replaced).
You can see if this is the case by running your Task Manager.
You might see one (or more) instances of Origin60 even though none are visible in your Taskbar or on the Desktop.
Shut down these instances.

If you follow the methods documented in the manual (see page 499 in the Origin User's Manual), you should not have a problem.

Ahh, thanks for the timely response - I strongly suspect your answer is correct. The graphs and documents in question were produced by someone else, so I don't have any more details on how they were created. Said author, however, is known to be staunchly against reading manuals or learning to use anything computer-related.
Thanks again!
