I want to plot surface plot. The data I have is X,Y and Z and I put that in 3 columns. Then I convert it to matrix using Edit:Convert To Matrix: Direct. I choose direct option as I do not want any correlation function. But when I plot the
graph, the actual Z-values plotted are much
above the actual. What is wrong?

Data that is regular, meaning there are a certain number of ordered X values for each Y value and the same number of ordered Y values for each X value, should be converted with Edit:Convert to Matrix:Regular XYZ.
When you select Direct, this creates a worksheet with all the cells in the matrix corresponding to rows and columns in the worksheet. This is not what you want.
To see that it is not using the correct X and Y data, select Matrix:Set Dimensions.

Thanks for your reply!
I don't have regular data (I have some X values having no Y,Z data and viceversa).
This means I have to use RandomXYZ. Right?
Since I don't have a square matrix, I get "Error inversing the matrix" message when I try to use correlation/quick-correlation. I can plot with weighted average, but I DON'T want weighted average.
What is the solution to this problem?

| I am so glad to find this question--I too am having major problems with making surface graphs. My problem is: I import my ASCII data into my worksheet, set my C column to Z, click on the Z to highlight it. Then I select convert to matrix--but when I try to select Regular XYZ, I get the message "You must select a single Z column." I thought I HAD selected a single z column but apparently not. I did some of these graphs several months ago and now I cannot even duplicate them--I have obviously forgotten something important to do. I am working with version 5. PLEASE, Please can you help me with this problem? |

As far as the "You must select a single Z column" message, I am not sure why you would get this if you are first highlighting the Z column. It might be best if you contact me directly. Please email tech@originlab.com with the subject of Att:Laurie.
