I want to make a plot with a lognormal axis, i.e. if I plot a lognormal distribution, I get a straight line. I can translate my data to lognormal values so i get a straight line, but then the values at the axis do not correspond with the original data. How can I make a proper lognormal axis?

thanks
Paul

Hi Paul:

I have to confess that I'm not entirely sure that I know what it is that you are trying to graph. I consulted several desk-side references but was not able to see a depiction of a lognormal distribution as a straight line. I don't believe Origin can handle this easily, as it occurs to me that the spacing of ticks and values along such an axis would be dependent upon the characteristics of a particular distribution.

However, I think that I can suggest something that might work for you. If you can translate your values such that you can create a straight line then you might do this: First of all, hide the x axis, ticks, and labels in your lognormal plot.

Use Origin to interpolate some values that you would want to use as your tick labels for your "lognormal" axis. Put these interpolated values into a "label" column to the right of your y column. Then, create a line and symbol plot that plots those interpolated values against y=0 (in other words, your x column will contain the interpolated data points that you want to use to label the "axis" and the y column will contain only 0 s). What you are going to do is to effectively create a line plot that will masquerade as an axis.

You can adjust the position of your custom "axis" in the y dimension by making sure that the x-axis and y-axis share a common origin. Note that as options in the Line and Symbol plot you can choose to specify a " | " character as your symbol (tick mark) and you can opt to show data labels. Also, you can rotate and position the data labels (masquerading as axis values) in the Plot Details dialog box.

I hope you can make some sense of this. Let me know if you need a better explanation. Thanks
Mike
