I am interested in using Origin to procees data generated by flow cytometers. They generally provide huge amounts of data, but limited data analysis capabilities.

The files from different instruments confirm to the Data File Standard for Flow Cytometry (FCS). See:

I wonder if anyone has developed a binary import for the FCS files (version 2.0 or 3.0)?

It should be easy enough to do this with LabTalk/Origin Pro. What is it you want exactly?

- Just data?
- Data + Header?
- Data + Header + Text?
- Do you want the text in a Notes window?

Just about anything is possible. You would have to mess around with offsets in the file in order to dig out each segment.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for responding.

For now, the most important thing to import is data and headers.

I had a discussion with one of the flow cytometer manufacturers. They thought that it would be a major undertaking to parse out the fields from the files (several weeks months of work). That is why I was hoping that someone had already done this......

Are you using a flow cytometer? Would you be interested in a binary import routine for Origin?

The format described at the link you posted appears to be pretty straight forward. If one was to write code for importing FCS files into Origin where can they get FCS files for testing?
