Hallo guys,
I have a question about importing some data files. Some background first.
On my Nt machine, I tried to install Origin 6.0 as user but there were some problem in some dialogs. I then asked our administrator to do it and everything works ok now.
The problem is that if I import some ascii files with my installation or with my administrator installation I don't get the same results. More in detail my data file looks like:

1 2 3 4
"garbage"
"garbage"
"garbage"
0 0
0 0
0 0
1 1
2 2
3 3
..
..
..
..
Now if I use the version I installed I get:
0 0
0 0
0 0
1 1
2 2
3 3
..
..
..
..
If I use the version our administrator installed I get
1 1
2 2
3 3
..
..
..
..
and obviously I need the first 3 lines :-(
Changing the file format is not an option and I'm using the same import options and the same worksheet template.
Any idea about what is going wrong? Can it be a problem with some permission on the file where Origin stores the Ascii option or something similar?
Thanks for all the help you can provide and sorry for the long post
Fabio

Hi Fabio:

I gather from your post that you are continuing to use the Origin 6 installation that you did without having administrative priveleges. There are a number of possible problems that could occur with this installation and so I would discontinue using it.

I made a TXT file with your sample data and imported it into Origin 6.0 Release with the default ASCII import settings. I did not get the desired result and so I set the "Specify known subheader lines (0,1...)" in the "File Header" group to 4 (making sure to check accompanying radio button, of course) and all of the data below the three lines of "garbage" were imported. Try this and if this doesn't work for you, call OriginLab Technical Support.

FYI, I tested the same file using Origin 6.0 SR4 aka Patch 4 (available free at www.originlab.com to registered Origin users), and found that I could import your file cleanly by simply accepting the default Origin template ASCII import options. You might want to get Patch 4 at some point. Be sure that you have administrative priveleges set before applying the patch file.

Thanks. I hope that this solves your problem.

Mike

Hi Mike,
thanks a lot for your suggestion.
After reading your message I checked the version number and SR4 is the one the works correctly. I had only to ask the administrator to apply the patch and now it works perfeclty.
Thanks again
Fabio
