I want to fit a plane to 3D data points. How can I do this?

Actually, the Pro version of 8.0 supported Surface Fitting, but more importantly, even very old versions of Origin supported multiple independent variable functions so you should be able to define and use a Plane function: Independent Variables: x,y Dependent Variable: z Parameters: P1,P2,P3 Function: z = P1+P2*x+P3*y In older versions, the display of the fit shows two graphs: XZ and YZ, and we did not calculate a fit XYZ nor did we display the plane as we do in newer versions. |

Hi,
As Snow wrote, directly fitting from the 3D scatter, you need OriginPro 9.x, especially only route for non-linear surface. But just for a plane which is linear, you can run the multiple regression for its parameters, then you can plot its surface. Also, though it was created for 7.5, you can try the File Exchange item: http://www.originlab.com/FileExchange/details.aspx?fid=80
