OriginPro 9.1.0G (64bit) SR2 Operating System: Windows 7 Professional
Dear all,
I am wondering if the behavior of the quickfit tool was changed lately. Please follow the next steps to verify: 1. open a new Origin project 2. if not available create a new worksheet with two columns (x and y) 3. fill the two columns with random numbers 4. create a point plot from these two colums (should result in a picture of a point cloud) 5. use the quickfit tool with linear fit
Now comes my question. Up to now I was thinking that the yellow box of the qickfit tool is used to choose the x-range of the data points which one want to take for fitting. But now it seems all points are used, also if I have the yellow box only in a small part of the diagram located. The linear fit looks very similar, independent from the location of the yellow box. To be more drastically I can change the yellow box to a very small rectangle with only two points located in this area. I expect now a linear fit through these two points only but the fit looks like taking nearly all points and the fit is nearly horizontal (this should be the case for taking all randomly distributed data points).
Is there a mistake by me? Did I make a misconfiguration? Or is there a bug in the quickfit tool?
Best regards, Steffen |

Hi Steffen,
The reason the ROI box looks like it is not looking at only the points within the box, is that the Quick Fit tool takes into account the order of the points, not just the magnitude. This means that if you order your X values in either ascending or descending order, this problem will not occur.

Dear zahraa,
thanks for pointing that out. Due to the fact that I can't reorder my data points I have to avoid using the quickfit tool for such data. Maybe in a next version of the quickfit tool a temporarly ordering of the data points could be included. This might be an useful option for many users.
Best regards, Steffen |
