Origin Ver. and Service Release (Select Help-->About Origin): 9.1
Operating System: Win7
Hey all,
i currently have an issue with a bar diagramm for Origin. It is about secndary structures in proteins, and divided into two different solvents used on one hand and two characterization methods (FTIR and Raman) on the other hand. It now should look something like this:
Divided into two parts: Left FTIR and right Raman. Each will contain two data sets, for each solvent used. Each data set consists of four bars belonging to the secondary structures. These will be assigned in the legend.
I've seen the tutorial for a similar case, however I am not able to press Legend -> categorical values (if thats how its called in english?) as it is done in the tutorial. I am at the point that my diagramm is divided into FTIR / Raman and I have the data sets, however I have the according structure right beneath the bar, which is not how it should be....
Can anyone help me out?

Hello,
Here are two suggestions:
1. You can double click any column plot to open Plot Details dialog.
On Pattern tab, set Fill Color to Indexed: and pick the group column which you want to match to.
So the color within each group changes.
Then when you right click Legend, you will see Categorical Values.
We added Categorical order control in 2015.

so that user can easily specify the categorical order for group columns and graphs will use the same order. In Origin 9.1, there is only Sort Groups checkbox so it can only use alphabetic order or unsorted order.
2. Double click any tick label such as alpha to open Axis dialog.
Make sure Bottom3 node on left panel. Right click the node and uncheck Show to hide it. (this context menu may not be available in SR0 of Origin 9.1. You may need to choose Help: Check for Updates to get latest SR (Service Release)
You can also go to Bottom1 node, to customize the table layout. E.g. inside border, outside border, etc.
By default, bottom2, bottom3 will change together with bottom1. You can check Independent Formats and Independent Layout checkboxes if you want to customize each tick label row independently.
The axis dialog GUI is greatly improved in Origin 2015 so it's much easier to navigate and customize in 2015.

Okay, that did the trick, thank you very much.
Still, one or two issues i just can't troubleshoot myself at the moment.
For reasons of continuity, I would like to have the order alpha - beta - turns - random. However, when creating that diagramm, it's always alpha - beta - random - turns, like it does it in alphabetical order.
Second, i woud like to have a distance in between every group of four, like in the excel thing. When I set the group size to four however, it does not group the FTIR and Raman together in the table...that's how it looks like, now. Already very close :)

1. About the display order, as I mentioned in previous reply, that's what we improved in 2015. You can have full control of the display order in graph by setting that column as categorical, and specify the order.
Also in your case, you have 3 group columns. You can specify the display order for each group.
In 9.1, you can only check Sort Group so they show with alphabetically order (for all groups). Or using the appearance order in the column. E.g. LEFT click the lock in graph and choose Change Parameters.... Uncheck Sort Group checkbox. If alpha, beta, turn, random isn't your data appearance order in the column, then uncheck Sort Column will not work either. You will have to manually arrange the data in worksheet first in 9.1.
2. Regards to the the 2nd questions, I saw 4 columns are already grouped together similar to Excel. Do you mean there are duplicate Formic Acid, and HFIP tick labels? If so, double click tick label e.g. Formic Acid.
Axis dialog will open. Make sure Bottom1 is selected on left panel.
Go to Table --> Table Layout node. Set Merge Labels to be Between Subgroups/Subsets.
BTW, fill color can be customized. In Plot Details dialog, after you set Pattern Fill Color to be Indexed, you will see Color List tab. Check Use Custom Increment List and customize the first 4 colors in the list.
