Dear All,
I tried to insert Origin Graphs in Microsoft Word. Origin: copy page Word: paste Up to here it worked well.
However, when I want to edit this graph later by double clicking on it in Word, Origin opened and I could edit the graph. When I colsed the origin and returned to the word window, the gragh did not change. When I double-clicked the graph in word again, the origin started up and the graph in origin was the new graph, not same as that in word. For some graphs, things happened like this, but for other graphs, everything is OK. What is the problem with my origin and word?
My origin is V 7.0 sp4, word is micorsoft word XP.
Thanks for any help.

There are two ways to use OLE objects in an application: Linked and Embedded - that's what the L and E in OLE mean. When you copy (from an Origin graph) and Paste into another application, the default is (usually) to Paste an Origin Graph Object which can be edited by double-clicking on the object to launch Origin as the editor. In this case, the Origin graph is Embedded and however your application document is saved, is how it will appear when opened. If you choose Linking, then whenever you open your application document, the application will look for a file and display the 'latest version' of that file. Origin supplies a special file format : OGG for linked graphs. To create this format, choose File : Save Window as with a Graph window active. Once that graph window is saved, you can do something like Insert : Object : File or Insert : Object : Create from File. (The details depend on your application.) When you pick an OGG file, AND specify that you LINK to that file (again, your application may have special instructions), then every time you open that document, you will see the latest version of that OGG file, even if it has changed since the last time you viewed the document. You can still use Origin as an editor by double-clicking on it. When you have made your changes, select Edit : Update Client and then Exit Origin.

I'm seeing this same problem with embedded graphs in Excel. These were pasted in as embedded Origin objects. I don't want to use links. How can I get the embedded graph to update after I've edited it? After editing, I always select "Update (file name).xls" before exiting Origin. Thanks, Roger |

I had this problem in Excel as well. What I found was that after you are done editing the graph in Origin go back in to Excel and save the document. This seems to update the graph in Excel. Make sure you DO NOT close Origin before saving the Excel document or else the graph does not get updated. After you save Excel you can go and close Origin.

Ryan, this didn't work for me. I even closed Excel, restarted and reread the file. However, if I opened the graph again in Origin and exited after selecting "Update..." it worked. Squirrely. Thanks for the reply, Roger |

Roger,
I have had problems with ActiveX/COM in the past and like you said it tends to do "squirrely" things. It is my feeling that the issue is on Microsofts' side. The reason I think this is because in my case if I don't save Excel after editing in Origin the graph does not get refreshed after exiting/and or selecting "Update..." in Origin. However if I double-click on the graph again in Excel it will open up Origin for editing and the graph looks correct with all the previous changes. This is what hearme wrote in the original post. I bet there is a command deep in the bowels of excel/word that refreshes the objects but I'm not sure where it is. I'm glad you found a solution for your issue.
