Hi everybody,
I know that a lot of people, including myself, have been waiting for a Linux version of Origin. While this may never happen, I just wanted to let people know of a nice little program called crossover office, http://www.codeweavers.com/site/products/, that allows you to use windows programs on linux. While I havn't had time to do extensive testing, I've tried the Origin 7.5 demo and it seems to work great. Installation is a snap and so far nothing seems out of whack. So if anyone is really in need of running Origin on Linux, I suggest that they give this a try!

Hi quickkk,
Have you done any printing and export (both raster export, like BMP, JPG, GIF, and vector export, like EPS, PDF, EMF) from Origin on "CrossOver Office" in Linux? What about copy-paste of graphs from Origin into other applications? How's the quality, especially "what-you-get-is-what-you-see" aspect, correct font rendering, line thickness accuracy, etc.? Are there any particular things in Origin that just don't work on Linux with "CrossOver Office"?
Thanks in advance.

Hi ML,
Unfortunately, I don't have a full version of Origin to work with anymore (I changed universities), so I can't do any *.eps exporting. Here's what I've observed with the demo version.
- Cut and paste of graphical items into other programs doesn't work. I've tried pasting into native Linux programs like openoffice, and also emulated programs like MS Word (which I can run using the crossover office program), and have had no luck. However, I can cut and paste text items.
- I've tried exporting using JPG and BMP. JPG export seems to work perfectly, as I cannot see any differences between the original graph and the exported one. As for BMP, it seemed like one of the axis was missing in the exported file, but maybe the problem was with the program I used to open the BMP file. I'll try printing the exported document to be sure...
- The only thing that doesn't seem to work well within the Origin program itself is the Excel worsheet button. While I do have Excel installed through crossover office, accessing Excel from Origin is very slow and often stalls, or crashes, the program. This shouldn't be too much of a problem though.
So these are my observations so far. Since I've just started a new project, I don't have any need of Origin for the moment (there's nothing to analyse) so I havn't had the chance to play around with it too much, thus there might be other problems. I think that crossover office uses a modified version of WINE to emulate the windows environment. So if you know of any problems specific to origin on WINE, then let me know and I can test it out using my demo copy.
Cheers! |

Has anyone tried installing Origin using Wine? If so, what did you do? VMware is another easy way to get origin on Linux, which is what I am currently doing, though I'd much rather see it running in Linux than on an emmulated Win XP ... VMware is too slow even with my new fast machine (P4 3.2 GHz, 2GB RAM).
Are there any plans to port Origin to Linux. Until there are, anyone interested might try labplot which seems to do a good job of emmulating all of the origin graphing (2-d and 3-d). You can find it through www.linuxlinks.com (under software>>scientific>>graphing & statistics). It has a pretty friendly GUI interface, but doesn't do things from a spreadsheet, it simply opens ascii data files and plots directly from them. |

I'm not sure what the problem is with Origin 7. I tried a while ago, and I could never get past the password menu (it would always say that the password was wrong, even though it wasn't). However, the Origin 7.5 demo installed without a hitch. In the crossover installation menu, I opted to install "unsupported software". Then I selected the *.exe option, and pointed to the origin *.exe installation file. Things went smooth from there. |

Hello!
Why don't you try LabPlot, it's not so bad. |

Another Prog to replace Origin is qtiplot, which to my point of view is already more easily to use than labplot. - You will quite often need your mouse to double click somewhere to find all options, though.

If you want to try out a debian or red-hat install-package without compiling it by yourself - send a request to. mtwulf [a t] gmx dot de

You will be more happy if you use vmware with an older windows version (Win98 or NT 4.0 with service pack 6 are much faster than XP) - they comply with office xp too at acceptable speed. Better do not use the vmware integrated shared folders because of problems with special caracters and non-respect of umask, but install samba, if you need to share files. (use NAT for the vmware network)

I have tried to use Origin 5.0 and Origin 7.0 with crossover office. The 5.0 version is approximately working with crossover office 4.1, while the 7.0 is unstable and unusable. When using 5.0 I have noticed that teh text boxes slighty changes position when graph is printed or when you open it (or the project) in Windovs enviroment. Also in the project there shoulden't be to many windows (graphs) open at the same time.
I have also tried both versions of Origin under new wine but they are not working. |

What is not working with current Wine? I tried a few months ago and 6.0 and 7.5 were working rather well. (Origin 6 didn't allow to save projects/worksheets though.)
(I currently use CodeWeavers CrossOver Office 5.0pre, which works just fine with 6.0 (e.g. saving) and with Origin 7.5 (my work horse); though I have also only minor problems: some less-important dialogs don't work and Origin crashes from time to time, but not significatly more frequently than under Windows.)
