Looking at this forum it looks as if people have been asking for a linux version of origin for more than 4 years! I realize that windows is the dominant OS, but Linux use is increasing rapidly. More importantly, linux is gaining popularity mostly with scientists and engineers ... the exact people who use Origin!
Personally, I love origin and have been a user since before v6 and was a beta tester for v8 (now v7.5). While I love OriginPro, my love for it pales in comparison to my hate for windows. I have since sworn off windows and all windows only programs. The only problem I find is that I am always seeking a replacement for Origin ... and a good one just doesn't exist.
As I see it, the growth of Linux users in the scientific community and the lack of a Origin replacement in Linux makes for a ripe market for Microcal to take advantage of. I most certainly would buy OriginPro (even a version 5 equivalent) if it were available on Linux.
In my search for a replacement I have tried the various office spreadsheets (what a joke), Grace (what a pain), labplot (too buggy), scigraphica (looks great but never works), gnuplot (lacks decent gui). I've also tried using wine and crossover office to install Origin (v6, 6.1, 7, and 7.5) with no luck. Please make a linux version ... please please please!!! |

Which version of CrossOver have you tried with which version of Origin? I'm considering buying Origin to run it under WINE/CrossOver, but I don't want to add yet another application which does not run (flawlessly enough) under WINE.
The simplest methode to create a Linux version is to use compile Origin against the WINE library; then all windows calls work but under the hood it is a real linux program (and a bit faster than running under WINE). |
