Origin Version (7.5 SR4):
Operating System: Win2KSP4

How can I set default settings such as keeping speed mode off, not displaying complete dataset name in the legend(I just want column name), setting the x offset for waterfall plots to 0.

Hi,

All such settings are saved in templates - each graph type is created with settings saved in template files.

To change the template settings, you can create an instance of that graph type, then change settings, and resave template. Then when that template is used in the future, your new settings will take effect.

(Also see themes feature which is related).

Now, specifics:

To change the speed mode, double-click on graph to bring up Plot Details, go to Layer on left tree, go to Size/Speed, and then either turn off Worksheet speed mode setting, or increase number of points.

To change legend display to show only column name, again in Plot Details, click on top page/graph level on left, go to legends tab, and turn off "full dataset name" check box

To change x offset setting to 0 as default, just change it to 0, and resave template (file->save template as)

When saving template, if you do not want to change the default Origin template, you can save to a new name, and then use Template Library under plot menu to access your user-defined template.

Since you have Origin 7.5, setting a System Theme would be a better approach. Of the three properties you mention:
Speed Mode
Full Dataset Name in Legend
Waterfall X offset
the first two can be added to a System Theme which - while in use during plot creation - will override whatever setting is in a graph template. The third applies to only one template type, so you should just plot a waterfall graph, set the X Offset to 0 and do a File : Save Template As..

The steps for creating a Speed Mode Off Theme :

  1. Click (or Ctrl+Click) in a graph layer - not on the data - to activate Layer selection.

  2. RightClick within the selected Layer and choose "Save Format as Theme.."

  3. Click the Edit Theme Details button (the pencil).
Speed Mode is controlled by the properties in the Root \ Page \ All Layers \ Speed branch.

  4. Remove all other branches by right-clicking and choosing Delete

  5. Remove all properties in the Speed branch except Worksheet and Matrix

  6. Remove any check marks in Worksheet and Matrix

  7. Give this theme a name and description

For shutting off Full Dataset Name in Legend,
proceed as above, but do not start with the Layer selected. The only property you will need is in Root \ Page \ Legends \ Full Dataset Name and you will want it to be unchecked.

By Ctrl+Click in the Theme Gallerey (F7), you can combine these micro themes (with any other themes) into a new theme you can set as the System Theme.
