Origin Version (Select Help-->About Origin): 7.5P SR5 Operating System: W2k
Hi,
I tried to rearrange some layers in a graph window using the layer tool. I have 6 layers on that graph. When I try to swap one layer with another Origin claims
"Error! You need to specify two discrete layers between 1 and 6."
which is funny, since I wanted to swap surely existing layer 1 with layer 5. Nevertheless the combobox only allows to select valid layers, I'd assume. Anyway, I am unable to swap my layers here. What does it mean?
Marko
P.S.: The only way to get it work eventually was to restart Origin!

Hi marko:
I was able to produce this error message in two ways. The first was by specifying that I swap a layer with itself (i.e. Layer A and Layer B both set to the same layer). Secondly, by direct edit of this combo box, it is possible to enter "no value" or an inappropriate value (i.e. a value > than the number of layers in the graph). This seems to me to be a bug -- the list should allow only layers 1 to n-- but it's a relatively minor one. I'm not sure what you did, but it sounds like it is working for you now.
If this happens again, please let us know.
Thanks, Mike |

marko,
As a follow up to my previous post, I see that if you open the Layer Tool, then add a layer to your graph, the tool doesn't want to swap this new layer with a previously existing layer (and you get the "discrete layers" error).
Maybe this is what you did?

Hi Mike,
I created a graph with the "Merge all graphs..." menu time combining 6 seperate graphs. Afterwards I opened the layer tool, changed the margins and started to swap graphs on the page. As it turned out the tool was able to swap some graphs properly, with others it didn't want to work. Another time I tried the same thing, but this time Origin wouldn't allow to swap any of the existing layers. Then, as written above, a restart of Origin made the trouble vanish and I could do swapping as required.
Because of this strange behaviour I expect that there is a bug in the layer tool, because I selected the layer numbers from the comboboxes and didn't do anything weird (as typing the numbers myself or adding extra spaces in the input line).
As for now it works for me, but I think there is a problem hidden somewhere...

Thank you for the additional information, Marko. I created an item in our bug-tracking database, based on your earlier report. I will enter your additional comments. For future reference, this is tracked as QA 7371 -- "Layer Tool Move tab bugs".
