Origin Version (Select Help-->About Origin): 7.5 Operating System: Windows 2000
hey all,
I had a question about coordinate systems.
I see the list of coordinate systems (linear logit, etc) - I was wondering if you could do a custom one.
For example, a mercator projection, like:
http://www.originlab.com/index.aspx?s=9&lm=+154&pid=764
does not actually have a linear scale on the y axis, but gets more elongated as the latitudes approach 90 degress, as in:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mercator-proj.jpeg
Is there any way to tell origin that you are using a non-standard x or y axis, and to give a transform so that the coordinates aren't evenly spaced, or are spaced via a function?
Thanks much,
Ed
( ps - is there any easy way to just plot a function on origin? ex - how would you make a function y == x^2 + 2x? ) |

ps - I see that the graph in question is either a mollweide or gall orthographic, so it is indeed correct... but I'd still like to know how to do mercator projections correctly..

Ed, I don't know whether this helps you or not, but you might want to take a look at "Method II" described in this k-base item.
You can plot a function in Origin. For more information, please see the Help file chapter The Graph: Basics > Plotting Functions.

( ps - just curious...
but could you make two x-axes, and then make one of them invisible? Then you could use the method that you described to 'fake' a customer axis system..
Ed )

Ed,
For the "how to" on hiding graph axes, see the Help file (Help:Origin) topic:
The Graph: Axes> Axis Scale and Tick Mark Format> Turning On and Off the Display of the Axes
