How are people deploying Origin efficiently? I've been unable to find any help on installing origin without some sort of user intervention - which prevents me from using our automatic package management to install the application.

Moreover, we're now up to SR6. How do people install service releases when each appears to require manual intervention?

Installing the application initialy maybe required a minute's interaction plus another minute (say) to arrange a remote connection. Six service releases at another minute each plus another minute each time to set up the connection makes 14 minutes spent by a human on installing Origin to the latest release. On a hundred machines (we're not a big user of Origin) that's 1400 minutes - about three man-days. For one package!

Would appreciate comments from other users on how they install it - and from OriginLab explaining a) why this daft installation method was chosen and b) how it's all going to be fixed in version 8!

Yours,

Frank

Hi Frank,

You have a concurrent network serial number. This means that all Origins installed with your serial number need a connection to a FLEXlm license service. It also means that you have a choice of two Origin models - an Origin Server | Origin Clients model, and a stand-alone Origin model - or a combination of these.

The Origin Server | Clients model provides a real benefit for the case of patching to later service releases. For Origin Server | Origin Clients, you only patch the Origin Server. After patching the Origin Server, then the next time an Origin Client starts, the Origin Client is notified that updated files are available from the Origin Server. So the Origin Clients get auto-updated from the Origin Server. Another advantage of the Origin Server | Origin Clients model is that only the Origin Server is asked the location of the FLEXlm license service. Once successful, an Origin Server file is updated. This file is read by all the Origin Clients. So Origin Client users are never asked the FLEXlm license service location. The only drawback of the Origin Server | Origin Clients model is that Origin Clients cannot "borrow". They cannot detach from the network and still be able to run the Origin Client. Origin Stand-alones can detach and run in borrow mode.

There is a get-around if you want to distribute Origin stand-alones, such as because of borrowing, but you do not want users to have to know the FLEXlm license service location. To pre-set the location of the FLEXlm license service, you can do the following:
1. On one computer, install Origin stand-alone.
--> After completing the installation, there is an OLICENSE.LIC file located in the Origin program folder. This OLICENSE.LIC file contains the Origin installation serial number, the User Name entered during installation, and the Company Name entered during installation.
2. Start Origin stand-alone.
3. You will see a dialog box asking for a User Files Folder selection. Set the User Files Folder to a \Temp subfolder beneath the Origin program folder. This folder doesn't currently exist, so Origin will create it. (This is just an example. You can set to any folder.)
--> Now the OLICENSE.LIC file located in the Origin program folder gets copied into this User Files Folder.
4. You will now see the License Information dialog box asking for the FLEXlm license service location. Enter the host name or IP address, and port number if needed. You should see a "success" message.
--> Now the OLICENSE.LIC file located in the User Files Folder gets updated with the FLEXlm license service location.
5. Copy the OLICENSE.LIC file from the \Temp folder to the Origin program folder, over-writing the existing OLICENSE.LIC file in that folder.
6. Now delete the \Temp folder.
Now you can distribute this folder to all users. The users will not be asked the location of the FLEXlm license service.

In regard to automated distribution of an Origin Client or an Origin stand-alone installation, you can use InstallShield's silent install mode.

You can also copy an Origin stand-alone or Origin Client installation and distribute that installation using your own script.
