OriginPro 2022b (64-bit) SR1 9.9.5.167
Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64

Greetings!

How does the following settings work in impMSExcel?
My source Excel file has multiple lines I want to add to comments, but if I specify the from-to range I get duplicates in Comments after import.

Thank you.

I couldn't reproduce this either.
I made an excel file with 1st 3 rows as main headers.
4th to 9th rows with subheaders.
Then import them with same setting as users.

Comment only shows the contents from row 4 to 5.

Thanks, Snow

Dear Snow,

How do Header and Sub-Headers work in the case of impMSExcel?
Can you share your Excel worksheet, please?

Dear Snow,

What does origin do with Header lines: skip it all or takes info to somewhere?

Please try importing the following modified file: https://my.originlab.com/ftp/forum_and_kbase/Images/mainheader3_subheader3_7columns_AK.xlsx

By the way, how do I set a separator for multi-line comments from import?

Hi Andrey,

Is it mainly because u can't edit data if using data connector?

See https://www.originlab.com/doc/en/Origin-Help/Data-Connector
U can set @IPDC=0 so data isn't protected and u can edit on it.

Then try your data with data connector since we made some improvements in excel connector.
Check if the issues exists with data connector.

Regarding to separator in multi-line comments, could u give an example?

With your xlsx, i saw there are merged cells vertically in subheader area.
I set main header to 3.
subheader to 3.
Set comments to be 1 to 1
long name to 2
unit to 3

i can import them.

Thanks, Snow

You are right.
However my data file has 3 lines of header and 5 lines of subheader (lines 1-3 to Comments, line 4 to Long Name and line 3 to Units).
Please try to import another example:
https://my.originlab.com/ftp/forum_and_kbase/Images/mainheader3_subheader3_7columns_AK_AK.xlsx

Set Header to 3, Subheader to 5, Long Name to 4, Units to 5, Comments From to 1, Comments To to 3.

Notice that content of vertically merged cells repeats in the import results.

this user requested merged cells put same value.

U also have t2, t5 merged in excel.

What would u expect them to show?

Thanks, Snow

Hm...
I would like to have an option to remove the duplicates in case of merged cells (at least vertically.
Technically Excel when merging cell puts the value in the most top left cell of the merged range. Thus, it is logical to have just this single value.
Does it make sense?

I jiraed your request not to unmerge the merged cells.

Since we have two types of users, we will add a system variable for this and CP thinks the default should be looking the same as Excel as you asked.
ORG-25113 S2

Right now when using ImpMSExcel, main header is no where to be seen.
This could be one reason to encourage you to use Data connector since data connector will put main header in a File Header row.

I don't understand "By the way, how do I set a separator for multi-line comments from import?" We don't have this option for sure.

Thanks, Snow

I ask about an additional option to specify separator (comma, semicolon, newline) to separate comments gathered from multiple lines. Currently the separator is space, which is not always a good solution. Since the comments themselves may contain white spaces it is almost impossible to separate using Search & Replace.

Another question is about User Parameters and System Parameters import: where do the go after import?

I support the idea.
Alternative option is removing duplicate values came from multiple lines of the merged cells.

I haven't heard of users using system parameters.
It seems weird that we don't show it after import but again, we are not fixing impMSExcel. U can set user parameter or system parameter rows after import. Then sheet will keep them when reimporting.

U can right click any column label row and choose "Edit Column Label Rows..." to check Parameter, Parameter 2, 3, ..... to make system parameters show.

Or left click any column label row header and choose the Properties button on mini toolbar to open Properties dialog.
On View tab, click Edit Column Label Rows...

Thanks, Snow

I don't think we use space as separator for multi-line comments.
E.g.

The excel has 3 main header, 3 subheader. The 1st row of subheader actually is multi-line.

When i import into Origin, i can specify accordingly.

Sorry that if i misunderstood your comment about this. Please use an example to let me know what the data is like and what u want it to be imported.

Thanks, Snow

By multi-line comments I mean comments that span across several rows in the source worksheet.
Please see the following multi-line comment example, reproducing my target table:
https://my.originlab.com/ftp/forum_and_kbase/Images/mainheader3_subheader3_7columns_AK_AK_AK.xlsx

Compare the contents of Merged and Unmerged sheets.

If comments are multiple lines in a single cell, then currently their import works correctly:

Currently I don't like repeats in the Comment in column A.
It would be great if import routine will remove these repeats.

Another question is about User Parameters and System Parameters import: where do the go after import?

Dear Cecilia,

Thank you.
What about removing/disabling repeats after duplicate import?
