My son is leaving for college to major in math. As a going away present, I am trying to put together an equation that is an approximation of the elevation profile of the 388 mile journey to his school. I downloaded a trial version of OrigonPro to do a curve fitting of my elevation data. Here is the link for an image of the first output I was able to produce:

Clearly, I'm not expert at this. The curve is not a very tight fit. Does anyone have any advice for how I might produce a better fit. The excel data for the curve can be found here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/sfum8st2zwtye91/Path%20Data%20-%20Copy.xlsx?dl=0

The x data is miles. the y data is feet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Mike

Hi Mike,

I will suggest you to smooth the curve firstly and then do peak fitting with Peak Analyzer,
https://www.originlab.com/doc/Origin-Help/Smoothing
https://www.originlab.com/doc/Origin-Help/PeakAnalyzer-QS

We have a lot of peak functions,
https://www.originlab.com/doc/Origin-Help/Peak-Analyzer-Functions
you can choose the one you desired.

Thansk,
Shirley
