Hi all,

I would like to make a map (like the map in the Origin website: https://www.originlab.com/index.aspx?go=Products/Origin#:~:text=GeoTIFF%20image%20as%20background%20in%20graph%2C%20with%20pie%20map%20and%20shapefile%20overlaid) from a GeoTIFF image. I can do with a 3D surface map with my GeoTIFF image, but there is no templates of this type of map as 3D surface map.
Could you guide me how to create this map or provide a template?

Yes, I can add an image as the background of a graph. But my purpose is to make a 2D relief map from a GeoTIFF file.

I have downloaded an ETOPO1_Ice_g_geotiff, then from that, I want to create a map that looks like a map on the Origin website (2D relief map). https://www.originlab.com/index.aspx?go=Products/Origin#:~:text=GeoTIFF%20image%20as%20background%20in%20graph%2C%20with%20pie%20map%20and%20shapefile%20overlaid

Do you have any idea about that?

Hi Nghiem,

When clicking the link u mentioned, there are two images. Which one do you mean? The upper-left graph with pie chart or the bottom-left one with 3d surface map?

When i google 2d relief map, it's more like a flat version of the bottom-left one.
If that's the one you meant, u can choose Tools: Template Center to download the 3d Surface Map template. After plotting with the template, rotate it to be more like 2d relief map.


This video shows how to plot the bottom-left one. https://youtu.be/94QhIODq8LY. The video is based on Origin 2022b so after adding ROI in image, user needed to create Linked Image for the subregion and then convert to matrix, then they can use the 3d Surface Map template.

In Origin 2023 (which u have), u can directly right click the ROI in image to create linked matrix and plot.

If I misunderstood, please let me know.

Hi Snow,

Thank you so much for your help. I did it. I just play with Azimuth, Inclination, and Roll to get a 2D relief map. One thing is that I need to change the projection to Orthographic so that the map is 2D.
The video is very helpful.

Yes, i forgot to mention setting Projection to Orthographic on the other tab.

What Azimuth, Inclination, and Roll did you set?

If we will add a online template for this, what should the values be in the template?

Hi Snow,

Yeap, after changing the Projection to Orthographic, I set Azimuth=180, Inclination=90, and Roll=0. I also set Labels & Titles & Ticks as All in Plane of Screen.

For lighting, as you suggested in the tutorial video, we can use hotkey S to adjust the direction of light, it is very convenient and easy. For light color (black) and shininess (64), I just leave it as default. Yes, we can change it to any color we like.

In my map, I want to fill in one color for the submarine area, so set Levels from 0 to maximum (i.e., 0-35000m). Then in colormap/contours I choose the color for level <0.

If you want the submarine area not visible, I mean just color and no relief feature, in colormap/contours you set color=none, then go to Planes and set color for XY plane.

And by the way, I want to have a coastline on the map, so I try to set the contour at level=0 but it does not appear. I am trying to figure it out. If you have a solution for this, please share.

Yes, u can add contour line(s).


Double click the plot.
On Colormap/Contours tab, click in any row of line column to turn it on and customize it.

BTW, do you mind letting mean know what Relief means since we are considering making a video of how to plot it. U mentioned "If you want the submarine area not visible, I mean just color and no relief feature, ..."

Hi Snow,

I spent some time creating some versions of the relief map. What I mean by a relief map is a terrain map like the one in Google Maps you can view a map with its topography.

I followed the 3D surface plot template to add contours because it is more flexible and adjustable.

Here are three versions.




For map1 and map2, the regions (<0 m) are filled with only one color (set level=0-maximum then apply palette for 0-maximum and in contours tab set color for <0 m).
For map3, I set level=min-max and applied a palette.

Many templates are very helpful. I appreciate that.
